Long
Hill Township
(Morris County)
The Long Hill Mountain Range crosses the township and offers spectacular views of the
nearby countryside. Hills, farmland and beautiful trees characterize neighborhoods of
stately colonials, ranches and splits and older homes which date back 250 years.
The four villages of Meyersville, Gillette, Millington and Stirling comprise the
township. A fifth area, Homestead Park, was one of the first major residential
developments and was established in 1920 by developer L. Preston Gates. The township is
still developingmore rapidly noweffectively weaving splendid new single family
construction and a few townhouse complexes near the centers of Stirling and Millington.
Almost 8,000 residents live here.
The township was first settled in the early 1700s by Scotch
Presbyterians. It got its start as the site of cigar factories and silk and grist mills,
but today only limited light industry and some smaller commercial establishments remain.
The Township of Long Hill lies along the banks of the Passaic River and was founded as
Passaic Township in 1866. The township changed its name in November 1992 by a binding
referendum from Passaic Township to Long Hill Township.
Township Hall on Long Hill Road was originally used as a
one-room schoolhouse, the Millington Schoolhouse, until 1933.
Today schooling includes two elementary schools, a middle school, a number of nursery
schools and a kindergarten through eighth-grade Catholic parochial school. Students attend
Watchung Hills Regional High School in neighboring Warren Township.
Interstates 78 and 287 make commuting to other metropolitan communities easily
manageable. Bus and rail service to Summit, Newark, Hoboken and New York City is also a
boon for commuters. East-west access roads to and through the community make travel from
town to town quite convenient for shopping trips to area malls like the Mall at Short
Hills and Bridgewater Commons. Local strip malls are an added convenience.
Swimming at several private clubs, horseback riding at nearby
stables and the enjoyment of nature at the Great Swamp National Wildlife Preserve are
among the many recreational activities available. A community recreation center with
programs for children and adults and an active Little League program round out the
recreational offerings. Residents may also participate in a number of civic organizations.
