Chester
(Morris County)
Old-fashioned charm, a sense of history and a country feeling
personify The ChestersBorough and Township. Today the old buildings on Main Street
have been renovated and house shops whose gifts, antiques, crafts and collectibles pay
tribute to a past when the town was a stagecoach stop. Just 1.7 square miles, with a
population of 1500, the borough is surrounded by Chester Township where open space and
natural beauty abound. Barely 6,000 residents populate the townships 29.6 square
miles where almost 30% of the land is composed of state, county and local parks.
The borough, while a viable retail business center, brims
with old-world kinds of annual activities which include an antique show, a craft show,
apple, peach and strawberry festivals, a Halloween parade and a Christmas open house tour.
The town draws visitors as well as residents who luxuriate in its rustic charm while
frequenting the shops, the restaurants or the ice cream parlors. The many state and county
parks located within the township attract hikers, joggers, picnickers and photographers
who enjoy outdoor activities and relish the natural beauty of the area. Hacklebarney State
Park, Cooper Mill and Willowwood Arboretum are among the areas natural offerings, as
is Black River Wildlife Preserve, a hunting preserve.
